ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਖਾਧਾ।।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਧਾ।।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ।।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਇ।।੧੫।।

Durmat baadha sarpan khaadha.
Manmukh khoya gurmukh laadha.
Satguru miley andhera jaaye.
Nanak haumei maet samaaye. 15.

दुरमत बाधा सरपन खाधा।।
मनमुख खोया गुरमुख लाधा।।
सतगुर मिले अँधेरा जाए।।
नानक हउमै मेट समाए।। 15।।

Answer: Man is bound by his ego.
He is consumed by his insatiable desires.
Led by his wanton mind he will remain lost forever.
Following the Guru’s advice will pull him out of darkness.
Meeting with the Guru will dispel all darkness.
Breaking the wall of ego he becomes one with the creator.
