ਪਾਤਾਲਾ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਲਖ ਆਗਾਸਾ ਆਗਾਸ ।।
ਓੜਕ ਓੜਕ ਭਾਲਿ ਥਕੇ ਵੇਦ ਕਹਿਨ ਇਕ ਵਾਤ ।।
ਸਹਸ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਕਹਨਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਅਸੁਲੂ ਇਕ ਧਾਤੁ ।।
ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ।।
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪੁ ।। ੨੨ ।।

Patala patal lakh agasa agaas.

Orak orak bhal thakey ved kahan ik vaat.

Sahas atharah kahan kateba asalu ik dhaat.

Lekha hoi ta likheeye lekhey hoi vinaas.

There are innumerable worlds below the sea and above the sky
Millions living in them have tried to seek the truth.
The Vedas and other scriptures say the same thing
That they have tried to get to the bottom of it but in vain.
They have tried but they are nowhere near the truth.
Because it is impossible for the creation to know the creator.

ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਏਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ।।
ਨਦੀਆ ਅਤੈ ਵਾਹ ਪਵਹਿ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ।।
ਸਮੁੰਦ ਸਾਹ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਗਿਰਹਾ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਾਲੁ ਧਨੁ ।।
ਕੀੜੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਨੀ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰਹਿ ।। ੨੩ ।।

Innumerable are the devotees singing in praise
But even they know nothing about the creator.
How can the rivers fathom the depth of the ocean?
The kings and emperors who have amassed mountains of wealth
Are not as powerful as a tiny ant
That never forgets thee.
